Cirklen

Since 2009 the Danish guitar sextet Cirklen, lead by Niels Bjerg and Anders Holst, has explored music in relation to spatial experience in a number of pieces and concert formats.

Cirklen (which means The Circle in Danish) began as an electric guitar band centered around a unique scenography where a circle of guitar amps was placed around the audience blasting club-inspired beats played exclusively on guitar. Their concerts challenged the usual audience-performer relationship by creating a space within the space that the audience had to actively choose to enter in order to become co-creators of their musical experience by placing themselves in relation to the different amplifiers.

Since then, they have explored and challenged movement and spatiality in a series of immersive works at the intersection of architecture, music and audience participation.

The group has contributed to a number of projects including lsildurs Bane, Bisse and We Go and is also known for its collaboration with krautrock legend Manuel Göttsching. From its inception, the ensemble has evolved in various sonic and visual directions, collaborating among others with choreographer Kirstine Kyhl Andersen and lighting designer Raphael Solholm.

Cirklen consists of Emil Palme, Anders Holst, Mika Forsling, Niels Bjerg, Samuel Hällkvist, Lars Bech Pilgaard and Mika Forsling – all musicians who have made an impact on the experimental music scene in Danish in a wide variety of projects.
